Why Does My Guitar Buzz? The Complete Guide
Fret buzz is the most common complaint that walks through the door — and it's almost never one single thing. Here's every cause we chase down on the bench, how to tell them apart, and what it takes to fix each one.
That annoying zzzz when you fret a note is a string vibrating against something it shouldn't — usually a fret, sometimes the nut, occasionally a loose part somewhere else on the instrument. The trick to fixing buzz isn't guessing; it's narrowing down where and when it happens. Do that, and the cause usually reveals itself.
First: figure out where it buzzes
Before touching anything, play the guitar slowly and pay attention to the pattern. It's the single most useful piece of information:
- Open strings buzz (before you fret anything) → look at the nut or the neck relief.
- Buzz in the first few frets (roughly 1–5) → usually neck relief that's too flat, or nut slots cut too low.
- Buzz in the middle and upper frets → typically uneven or high frets, or the action set too low for how you play.
- Buzz on one specific string or one specific fret → a single high fret, a worn spot, or a divot.
- Buzz that changes when you touch the headstock or body → it's not the frets at all; it's loose hardware rattling.
Cause 1: The frets themselves
Frets wear. Over years of playing, the strings carve flat spots and divots into the ones you use most (hello, first position). When some frets sit higher than their neighbors — because they're worn unevenly, were never leveled, or lifted slightly out of their slots — the string rattles against the taller ones.
How it's fixed
If there's enough fret height left, a fret level and crown is the fix: the frets are leveled to a single plane, re-crowned to restore a rounded playing surface, and polished. If the frets are too worn or too low to level, it's time for a partial or complete refret. Both restore a clean, even surface the string can't buzz against.
On the bench: we check for high frets and "ski ramps" (frets rising near the neck joint) with a straightedge and rocker before recommending a level — buzz that traces back to just a couple of high frets can sometimes be handled without a full level.
Cause 2: Action set too low
Action is the height of the strings above the frets, set at the bridge or saddle. Lower action feels fast and easy — until it's too low for your attack, and the strings start slapping the frets when you dig in. Players who strum hard or use heavy picks need a little more height than gentle fingerstyle players.
How it's fixed
Raising the action is part of a standard setup. There's a real trade-off here: the lowest possible action that plays clean depends on your frets being level and your neck relief being right — which is exactly why buzz is best solved as a whole-instrument setup rather than one isolated tweak.
Cause 3: Neck relief (the truss rod)
A guitar neck isn't dead straight — it has a slight forward bow called relief that gives the strings room to vibrate. The truss rod controls it. Too little relief (a neck that's flat or back-bowed) and the strings buzz in the lower and middle frets. Too much relief and the action climbs and the guitar plays high.
How it's fixed
A truss-rod adjustment sets the relief back into the sweet spot for your string gauge and playing style. It's a normal part of a setup and it interacts with everything else — change the strings' gauge or tuning and the relief usually needs a nudge too.
Cause 4: Nut slots cut too low
The nut holds the strings at the headstock end. If its slots are cut too deep, the open strings sit too close to the first fret and buzz when played open or in the first position. This is common on new imports and after a gauge change to lighter strings.
How it's fixed
If a slot is only slightly low, it can sometimes be filled and recut to the right depth. If several slots are off, or the nut is worn, cracked, or the wrong material, a fresh bone or brass nut cut to spec is the durable fix.
Cause 5: Loose hardware and rattles
Not every buzz is a fret. Plenty of "buzzing" is really something rattling in sympathy with the note. Usual suspects:
- Tuning machines with loose bushings or mounting screws.
- Truss-rod nut or a loose truss rod rattling inside the neck.
- Springs in a tremolo cavity.
- Loose electronics — jack nut, pot nuts, a pickup ring, or wiring touching a control cover.
- String ends at the headstock vibrating against each other or the wood.
- On acoustics, a loose brace or bridge starting to lift — worth catching early.
How it's found
These get tracked down by ear and touch — muting parts of the guitar one at a time while the note rings until the rattle stops. Tightening a loose nut is quick; a lifting brace or bridge is a structural repair you don't want to ignore.
Cause 6: Strings and setup drift
Old, dead strings, an uneven winding, or switching to a different gauge or tuning without a re-setup can all introduce buzz. Strings are the cheapest variable to rule out — fresh strings of the gauge the guitar is set up for is always a fair first step.
So how do you actually fix it?
Here's the honest answer: fret buzz is usually a combination of relief, action, nut, and fret condition all interacting. That's why a proper setup — relief, action, nut slots, and intonation dialed in together — clears up the large majority of buzz complaints. When the frets themselves are worn or uneven, a fret level and crown (or a refret) is added on top.
